A man accused of fleeing the country after allegedly committing a murder at a Minneapolis gas station in 2013 has been extradited and charged with second-degree murder. The suspect, 30-year-old Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali, is currently held in the Hennepin County jail, following a tip received by the police in 2022 and a subsequent DNA match linking him to the crime scene.
The Fateful Night
On October 30, 2013, Minneapolis police responded to a shooting at Bobby and Steve’s Auto World gas station. Upon arrival, they found 26-year-old Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed shot multiple times in the head while seated in a running vehicle. Haji-Ahmed was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Initial Investigation
- A security guard witnessed a man in a multi-colored letterman-style jacket jumping a fence and fleeing after the shooting.
- Investigators recovered five .45 caliber shell casings from the vehicle, determining the shots were fired from the back seat.
- A torn piece of cloth, believed to be from the shooter’s jacket, was found near the fence.
The Breakthrough
In 2022, a tipster contacted the police, claiming that Abdulkadir Ali had reached out for money to flee the country on the day of the murder, admitting to killing Haji-Ahmed. This led to the following developments:
- Homicide detectives learned in March 2024 that Abdulkadir Ali was back in the U.S. and living in Fargo.
- A warrant was obtained to collect his DNA, which reportedly matched the piece of jacket found at the crime scene.
- Abdulkadir Ali was apprehended in Grand Forks.
The Charges
Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali is scheduled to appear in Hennepin County District Court on May 16, facing charges of second-degree murder for the 2013 gas station shooting death of Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed.
