Let’s be honest for a quick second ( PlayStation 6 rumors ). The PS5 Pro has been collecting dust on our shelves for over a year now. It’s a monster, yes. GTA 6 is running like a charm on it, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is looking utterly insane with that new PSSR upscaling technology.
But if you’re a hardware enthusiast like myself, you’re already peering into the horizon. You’re already asking the burning question: What’s next?
We are well into the year 2026, and rumors spilling out of Sony’s HQ are quickly becoming a deafening roar. We’re no longer just talking about a graphics upgrade; we’re talking about a revolution in how we play. From “Project Orion” chip leaks to the possible return of a dedicated handheld, here is everything we know about the PlayStation 6.

Sony PS6 Official News

As of February 2026, Sony has officially confirmed. absolutely nada. Classic Sony.
But sometimes silence says more than words. Word is, Mark Cerny-the genius behind the PS4 and PS5 architecture-pays a visit to AMD’s labs rather frequently. Industry murmurs place us well into the “simulation phase,” where they’ve finalized design and now have to figure out how to bundle it together without making your TV stand a casualty.
Expected Release Date
This is the heartbreaking moment. A couple of years ago, we all concurred that late 2027 would be the time for us. Then, the so-called “RAM Crisis” of late 2025 came along.
As the AI data centers eat up every available byte of high-speed memory, the truth is, there is a shortage once again. Most trusted sources, like RedGamingTech and Moore’s Law is Dead, have moved their timelines.
Optimistic target: November 2027
Realistic target: November 2028
Sony clearly isn’t eager to have another round of the crazy days associated with the PS5, where it was impossible to purchase the console for two years. Another perspective is that they might wait until the supply chain situation sorts itself out, which could be another 2.5 years of the PS5 Pro.
Leaked Hardware Specs
Prepare yourself for the PS6 hype, since the numbers bandied about are utterly ridiculous. The main chip’s internal codename is said to be “Orion.”
-
Architecture: AMD Zen 6 (Hybrid Core)
-
Memory: 32GB GDDR7 (Unified)
-
Bandwidth: Estimated 1TB/s (This is instant-load territory)
-
AI Hardware: Dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for PSSR 2.0
The biggest change is the Hybrid Core CPU. Again like previous Intel processors, the PS6 is rumoured to feature a configuration with Performance Cores for all the heavy lifting and Efficiency Cores to bleed off the background OS tasks, leaving your game to munch on every scrap of power available.
GPU, CPU & Performance Upgrade
We already got a glimpse of Ray Tracing through the PS5 Pro, but the PS6 is being marketed as the device that finally masters Ray Tracing.
As for the GPU component, expect a custom design for RDNA 5. There are rumors, though, that Sony skipped RDNA 4 altogether to get closer to the next-generation jump.
The target is 4K native at 120 FPS, with no upscaling necessary but the possibility of retaining it.
The holy grail of this is path tracing. In fact, full path tracing of the sort experienced with Overdrive mode in Cyberpunk 2077 is highly anticipated for PS6 exclusives.
PSSR 2.0 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution): The AI upscaling technology we saw on the PS5 Pro was in beta mode. PSSR 2.0 on the PS6 promises to build a frame from scratch, effectively doubling the framerate without loading the GPU.
Expected Price Range
Hope you’ve been setting aside a little cash. Those $399 consoles are gone.
With wafer costs going up and 32GB of GDDR7 RAM being priced in the stratosphere, production comes with a hefty bill.
-
Estimated Price: $599 – $699 USD
Sure, it sounds steep, but if it delivers the goods, performance-wise, with a $2,000 PC, it’s a bargain.
Design Leaks

We have not yet seen a plastic shell, but patents suggest that this is an inherently efficient approach.
Try to find a “Chimney” design, something equivalent to the Xbox Series X or a more robust and substantial PS5 design. Sleek and slim consoles are a thing of the past; maximum performance requires maximum heat dissipation!
The Handheld Wildcard: ongoing speculation about a “Project Canis” – a dedicated handheld device to ship alongside the PS6. Not a streaming device like Portal, but rather an authentic handheld to play PS4 and PS5 games.
Storage & Backward Compatibility
Storage: 1TB just won’t cut it in 2028; the bar will be set higher at 2TB Gen 5 NVMe SSD.
The “Universal” Emulator: This is it, the big one. A patent recently filed by Sony hints at a hardware-level solution to PS3 emulation. We might finally be able to pop in a Metal Gear Solid 4 disc and play it natively on a PS6.
-
PS5 & PS4: 100% Compatible (Enhanced)
-
PS3: High probability via emulation
-
PS1/PS2: Likely via software emulation

Launch Games Expectations
The console lives or dies by its games, and by 2028 Naughty Dog will be ready with their new IP in the sci-fi niche.
- Santa Monica Studio is developping a brand-new God of War game, perhaps one focusing on Atreus, developed with the new PS6 hardware.
- Naughty Dog is also reportedly working on a new IP dubbed “Project Savage.”
- GTA 6 is expected to have a Definitive Edition re-release, which will include Full Path Tracing features, omitted from the PS5 version.
FAQs
1. Will the PS6 do 8K gaming?
On paper, yes. It has an HDMI 2.1a port which supports that resolution. And more importantly, it is capable of outputting 8K Realistically, don’t expect true native 8K gaming-more like AI upscaled to present 8K-level images for the few 8KTVs out there in 2026.
2. Should I buy a PS5 Pro now or wait for a PS6?
Go for the Pro; PS6 is at least two years out, and two years at 30fps on a base PS5 feels rough. Enjoy it now and trade it in later.
3. Will my digital PS5 library transfer?
It absolutely will. The implications of Sony’s “PlayStation Ecosystem” promise are such that your digital purchases are assigned to you, not to a console. Your games will be waiting for you.
Final Thoughts
It appears the PlayStation 6 will be the console we’ve all wished for, where the “Performance Mode” delivers crisp graphics instead of blurring them further.
Of course, the wait until 2027 or 2028 might seem like an eternity, but the tech behind ‘Project Orion’ appears to be well worth it. Until then, I’m planning to grind ranked on my PS5 Pro.
